Make a Difference for our Birds Saturday, March 21, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Independence Grove 16400 Buckley Road Libertyville For directions: http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?address=16400%20W%20Buckley%20Rd&city=Libertyville&state=IL&county=Lake&country=US RSVP to jpollock (at) audubon.org ? or just show up! The Lake County Forest Preserve District is looking for birders who recognize most of our breeding birds by sight and sound and who can make two visits in June to one of their preserves and count the birds observed. In addition, they are seeking some special people who can take on an advanced monitoring regimen in selected preserves. There are many beautiful spots that still need monitors. Monitoring gives land managers a better picture of what habitats birds are using in their preserves and what might be impacting their populations for better or worse. Come to this meeting and learn about the program. Training is provided. Contact Judy Pollock with questions. This is the only BCN Census workshop that will be offered this spring, but there are openings for bird monitors in every county. Make this the year that you join us! Contact me for more info. And - check out the results of our ten years of monitoring. Less than a month ago, the work of removing tree plantations to expand the grassland-wetland complex and closing the valves in the drainage tiles finished, but the birds are already showing their appreciation, and the arrival of the Whooper felt like a major benediction. This spot is just north of the existing Bartel Grassland, and was formerly the model airplane field. (Last weekend, I saw shovelers swimming on the model airplane field, which has been relocated.) It is north of Flossmoor Road, and east of Ridgeland near south suburban Matteson. Now, from the corner of Central and Flossmoor, you can see grassland in every direction. There are already a number of sweet little wetlands developing on the site where pintails, ring-necked ducks, and shovelers were seen last weekend. Harriers and meadowlarks were also observed. I expect it will be excellent shorebird habitat this spring. Planting has not begun yet so there is a lot of bare ground (now mud) on the site, interspersed with grass. It is on an ancient lakebed so it has very small topography changes which create little wetlands. As the restoration progresses and these areas are planted, all manner of nesting wetland birds are possible, along with all the grassland birds that currently nest on other parts of the site. It will be an exciting few years there. Hope you get a chance to check it out.
